Accuser of Syracuse coach to plead guilty to sex abuse (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? A man accusing an ex-Syracuse basketball coach of molesting him as a boy said he himself plans to plead guilty to similar charges of fondling a boy.

Zach Tomaselli, 23, of Lewiston, Maine, is facing charges of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy he met at a day camp where he was serving as a counselor.

Tomaselli told Reuters in an interview on Monday he plans on pleading guilty to the incident.

"I just wanted to come forward and get this off my chest," he said. "I'm really tired of hiding behind lawyers."

Tomaselli is one of three men who have accused Bernie Fine, former long-time assistant basketball coach to Syracuse Hall of Fame coach Jim Boeheim, of sexual abuse. Fine, who has been fired by the university but not charged with any crime, denies the allegations of abuse.

Police in Maine arrested Tomaselli on April 11 on charges including sexual assault, exposing himself to a child and unlawful sexual touching.

Prosecutors in Maine could not be reached for comment.

Tomaselli said the victim in his case was the younger brother of a friend and he wanted to confess to the allegations because of the "years of pain and anguish" his actions will probably cause the victim.

"If I were able to say something to his family, I'd tell them I'd pray for him," he said. "He needs just as much help, strength and prayer as any sex abuse victim."

Tomaselli has alleged that when he was 13, Bernie Fine shared a Pittsburgh hotel room with him and fondled him and made him watch pornography.

Tomaselli's account helped spark a federal probe of Fine that has included searches of the former coach's house and office for pornography, financial records, travel receipts and other evidence, a law enforcement source told Reuters.

Tomaselli was asked if admitting to fondling a boy in his own life taints the credibility of his accusations against Fine.

"I dodon'tnt think it has an impact on the police investigation," he said. "I've already spoken to police about my charges and did everything but admit guilt."

Syracuse Police declined to comment on whether or not Tomaselli was forthcoming with authorities about his charges.

Tomaselli said it was sexual abuse from Fine and his now estranged father as a child that blurred the boundaries for him about determining what were appropriate relationships with between adults and children.

"I can't expect Bernie and my father to come forward to admit things if I can't admit things," he said.

Fine and Tomaselli's father could not be reached for comment on Monday.

New York state police told Reuters last week that they had investigated Tomaselli's allegations against his father and no charges were filed.

Tomaselli said he has yet to meet with his attorney to discuss what charges he'll plead guilty to in court. But by pleading guilty and agreeing to counseling, he's hoping to avoid jail time and the label of a sex offender, he said.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) ? Thousands of fans stormed the field and tore down goalposts after Oklahoma State's 44-10 victory over archrival Oklahoma, leaving at least 13 people injured, including two in critical condition, an emergency medical official said early Sunday.

Michael Authement, who heads the command post at emergency medical provider LifeNet EMS, told The Associated Press that a throng so big took to the field as the game ended that some fans were trampled and one person fell at least 15 feet onto concrete during a wild celebration by Oklahoma State fans.

"They won the game and stormed the field and ripped down the goalposts and some were jumping off the stands and hit the field and others got trampled. It was a nasty deal," Authement said.

He said the crowd was so big it took police at least 45 minutes to clear the crowd from the field at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater.

"There were thousands of people. Thousands of people stormed the field. You couldn't move there were so many people," he added.

Authement said nine ambulances, including six from LifeNet, rushed 11 of the injured away and the two in critical condition were flown to Oklahoma City hospitals. He said he knew of leg fractures but didn't have any details on the extent of the injuries, though two of the 13 had minor injuries and were treated at the scene and released.

An Oklahoma State University police central dispatcher said she had no immediate details to release when contacted by AP and the public information officer did not immediately return messages seeking comment. Stillwater police and the Oklahoma highway patrol also had no immediate comment.

CIA, US Marines start to leave Pakistan drone base

U.S. military personnel stationed at Shamsi Air Base in Pakistan have started to leave after the country's government told them to go following a NATO attack that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers near the Afghan border.

"Two U.S. cargo planes reached Shamsi Airport and the loading of the equipment and other cargo items has also started," an official privy to developments at Shamsi base told NBC News.

More than 70 U.S. Marines and CIA operatives who were present at Shamsi Base are due to leave.

Shamsi Air Base, situated in Baluchistan Province in south-west Pakistan, was used by the CIA to operate drone aircraft, which carried attacks inside Pakistan tribal areas.

Military ties between Pakistan and U.S. have hit an all-time low following the NATO attack, with Pakistan's military canceling all official visits to the U.S.

Story: Expert: Pakistan Taliban are 'weak and divided'

One U.S. government source told Reuters the United States has spent months preparing for a possible eviction from the Shamsi base by building up other drone launching and staging capability.

Earlier this year, after the U.S. raid that killed al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden, some Pakistani officials demanded that Washington vacate the Shamsi facility.

At the time, however, U.S. officials said that American personnel would remain at the base and would continue to conduct drone flights in pursuit of militants.

But in one concession, the United States stopped conducting lethal drone operations from that base and limited operations to surveillance flights.

Vacating the air base was seen more as an inconvenience rather than a critical blow to drone operations, which the United States also conducts from Afghanistan and possibly elsewhere.

The unmanned aerial vehicles may have a longer flight from Afghanistan but they are capable of hovering overhead for hours as they seek to spot suspicious activity and follow militants.

U.S. officials are reluctant to openly talk about drone operations because they are considered a covert CIA activity.

NBC News and Reuters contributed to this report.

Carbon cuts strategy 'on track'

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has insisted that plans to cut Britain's carbon emissions are on track.

In his Autumn Statement, Chancellor George Osborne said he was worried about the impact of "endless social and environmental goals" on businesses.

But Mr Huhne said his colleague was "signed-up" to the process and had himself backed the introduction of a floor to regulate the price of carbon.

Labour said the government's green credentials had been exposed.

Asked about the recent announcement of a reduction in subsidies for solar panels, Mr Huhne said this was a "sensible course correction" because the cost of panels had fallen.

'Sustainable growth'

Feed-in Tariff subsidies, which enable people who install solar panels on their roofs to get rebates for the electricity they put back into the grid, will be halved for people who have their panels installed after 12 December.

Labour say the move will "strangle" the solar panel industry while business groups say the step is short-sighted and will threaten jobs.

One of the largest installers of solar panels, Carillion, has told 4,500 staff they may be made redundant because of the cut and the Department of Energy and Climate Change is also facing two possible legal challenges over the plans from Friends of the Earth and lawyers acting for installers.

But Mr Huhne defended the move, saying it was done in response to market developments.

"A lot of the businesses that have been involved in it have been growing at an incredible pace, precisely because there's been such a big fall in the cost of solar panels," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"So that the original subsidies which had been designed, without any view of the real world, by the last Labour government, have not been brought down in line with the fall in the cost of the solar panels.

"All we've done is move them back in line so that the industry can grow sustainably, and we don't use up all of the budget that's allocated for solar panels by the end of next year."

Carbon plan

Mr Huhne was speaking ahead of the launch of the government's "carbon plan" - a strategy designed to ensure the UK meets its target of halving carbon emissions, from 1990 levels, by 2025.

The energy secretary said the government would not need to spend any more money in this Parliament to achieve this but, from 2015 onwards, huge investment could be required in new technologies to reduce emissions from transport, buildings and energy production.

The estimated cost of this transition could be as high as ?20bn, the plan suggests, although it also could ultimately result in a net benefit to the economy of ?1bn.

Mr Huhne has vowed to change the way the country produces energy, replacing old coal plants with gas-fired power stations and renewable sources as well as building a new generation of nuclear plants.

The carbon plan suggests that household energy bills could be 7% lower in 2020 than now if government policies on home insulation and energy efficiency are fully implemented.

But environmental groups have attacked proposals, included in Mr Osborne's Autumn Statement, to help energy intensive industries with rising costs, saying it will reward some of the UK's largest polluters.

Mr Osborne said the ?250m package of support - including increased relief on the climate change levy - was necessary to ensure UK firms were not "priced out of the world economy" in the tough climate and jobs lost.

Labour said the failure of the government's economic policy was undermining its agenda and its flagship Green Investment Bank would not have full borrowing powers to fund low-carbon projects until 2016.

"The Conservatives said 'vote blue, get green' but the reality is we are not getting very much at all," Angela Smith, shadow deputy leader of the House of Commons, said.

"It will take more than a few huskies to restore the prime minister's green credentials."

Strike test for new Greek government (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greece's new coalition government promised rescue creditors it will impose additional "deep and broad reforms," as unions launched a general strike Thursday against the economic austerity.

The 24-hour strike is the first test of union opposition to Prime Minister Lucas Papademos' three-week-old government, and is set to halt most public services. Protest rallies are planned in central Athens to start after 11 a.m. (0900 GMT).

The protest will also halt ferries, disrupt public transport, close schools and leave state hospitals running with reduced staff. Airport traffic, however, is not likely to be affected.

Papademos wrote the leaders of the European Union, European Central Bank and IMF, promising to conclude a massive new bailout deal for Greece and impose tough cost-cutting measures needed to stop the country overspending.

"The government is determined to continue the process of fiscal consolidation and structural reform in order to secure sound public finances and improve the country's international competitiveness," he wrote in a letter, dated Tuesday and made public late Wednesday.

Backed by the country's main Socialist and conservative parties, Papademos now heads negotiations for the new debt deal, amid an escalating crisis in the eurozone that is threatening its largest economies and ultimately the single currency's existence.

The new deal for Greece, to receive euro130 billion ($174.43 billion) in more rescue loans and support for banks, also includes a voluntary write-down of debt held by private holders of Greek bonds.

On Tuesday, eurozone countries approved the release of a crucial rescue loan installment to Greece that will total euro8 billion ($10.73 billion) along with a portion covered by the IMF.

In return for the EU-IMF lifeline, new austerity measures impose job suspensions and pay cuts in the public sector and an emergency property tax that threatens to leave households without power if they delay payment.

"They are creating a situation that can no longer be tolerated, can no longer be endured. Unfortunately people are in a state somewhere between poverty and despair," Ilias Iliopoulos, deputy leader of the civil servants' union ADEDY told AP television.

"The measures are supposed to improve the country's financial situation, but the country is getting deeper into debt, unemployment is rising, and the recession ? unprecedented in recent times ? is worse than anywhere else in Europe. People are falling apart."

Papademos' letter was addressed to top EU and eurozone officials Herman Van Rompuy, Jose Manuel Barroso and Jean-Claude Juncker, was well as ECB president Mario Draghi and IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde.

The new coalition government, formed midway through the Socialists' four-year term in office, is due to call early elections at the end of February.

When the Ravens moved to Baltimore in 1996, the decided to conduct their training camp at nearby McDaniel College, in Westminster, Maryland.

This year, the lockout caused the Ravens to decide to move camp to the team?s facility.? They?ve decided to stay put for training camp in 2012.

?We?ve had long, serious discussions about this decision, and, when all is said and done, we believe we can better prepare for the season by holding training camp here as opposed to McDaniel College or any other facility away from here,? Ravens president Dick Cass said in a release issued by the team. ?We wanted to let the officials at McDaniel and at the hotel [Best Western] know as soon as we made the decision.?

The move, which Cass said wasn?t influenced by financial considerations, apparently is a product of the new labor deal.

?In 1996, Westminster was the best place for us to have training camp,? G.M. Ozzie Newsome said. ?How teams conduct training camp today is vastly different.? Our football needs and requirements are different.? The absence of two-a-days, how much space we need for the players and the meetings, the limited number of practices allowed by the new CBA, the importance of having an indoor field when the summer storms come ? all of that and more football-influenced factors, had me recommend to [owner] Steve [Bisciotti] and Dick that we hold camp here.?

Bisciotti apparently wrestled with the move.? ?From a football and team point of view, it?s an easy decision,? Bisciotti said.? ?Personally, this is difficult.? Some of my best memories as a kid are my family?s visits to the Colts? training camp in Westminster.? Part of my devotion to the game and the players who made it great and are heroes to many of us, started on those visits.

?We completely understand that this takes away an important part of our connection with our fans. I regret that,? Bisciotti added.? ?Hopefully, we can find other ways to continue this outreach.? We?ll have more to say on this as we develop these programs.?

It?ll be interesting to see whether other teams follow suit, abandoning the traditional training camp experience for the facility to which the players report to work throughout the year.? The reasons articulated by the Ravens should apply to every team that currently has an off-site camp.? Time will tell whether more and more of them come to that same conclusion.

Doris Day still sings at 87, offers fans "My Heart" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? At age 87, Doris Day is not exactly pop music's latest hot young artist. But this week the star of film, TV and music returns to the U.S. record world she conquered more than 60 years ago with a new album, "My Heart."

The CD, which hits record stores and websites December 2, is filled with old standards like "My Buddy," previously unreleased tunes such as "Stewball," about a race horse Day loved, and pop hits of the 1960s and '70s such as "Daydream" and "You Are So Beautiful."

"I like the music when I was working and singing," she told Reuters. "I think the writers were so incredibly brilliant, and when you sang a song of theirs that you loved, it really meant something. And love songs, I love love songs."

Day, whose first hit was 1945's "Sentimental Journey," went from big band singer to movie star of the 1950s and '60s. She became the quintessential All-American girl and a major box office draw with films such as "Calamity Jane" and "Pillow Talk," opposite Rock Hudson. In the late 1960s, she moved to TV where she starred in "The Doris Day Show."

But after that show ended in 1973, Day stepped out of the Hollywood limelight, moved to California's Central Coast and devoted herself to helping animals through various charitable groups, including the Doris Day Animal Foundation.

For the most part, she has stayed away from entertainment circles for more than 20 years since accepting a lifetime achievement honor from Golden Globe organizers in 1989.

Day recorded and released the songs for "My Heart" because she wanted to help animals -- sales proceeds go to her animal foundation -- and she dedicated the song "My Buddy" to her son, the late record producer and songwriter Terry Melcher, who died in 2004 after battling melanoma.

"He really was my buddy," Day said of her son. "I wanted that song to be there because it was for him and, well, all I can say is that I miss him very much."

PICKING SONGS SHE LIKES

Day's voice is sharp on songs such as "My One and Only Love" and "The Way I Dreamed It," and she says she picked the songs for the album simply because she liked them.

"It's difficult to explain," she said. "You pick the songs that you like and like a lot."

She agreed that she's lived a magical life -- from Ohio schoolgirl to Hollywood star -- but then remembered that not all was sunshine and sweetness.

While her years in music, movies and TV will be known for performing, Day's setbacks notably included being left deeply in debt after one husband and his business partner squandered her earnings. Still, she recovered.

"I had a lot of bumps, but each one led me to something better," she said.

Of all her endeavors, Day said she loved singing the most -- singing and the movies equally, on second thought. Of her favorite memories, she said, are those when she first became a singer in a big band with a swinging sound.

"My Heart" already has been released in Great Britain, and it landed in the top 10 on U.K. record charts, making Day among the oldest singers ever to earn that achievement.

Day said she thinks the key to her longevity is "laughing a lot ... My entire family has gone to heaven, so I'm all alone. But if I sat in my house and cried all the time, what kind of life would that be?"

She ends the album with the song "Ohio" -- a musical reference to the state where she was born, with its classic lyrics "Why, O why, O why-o//why did I ever leave Ohio?"

Day said she's not really sure exactly why she left home so many years ago, except that she simply loved to sing.

"I was going to marry a very nice man," she said. "I was going to have a nice little house and cook for him."

She pauses to reflect.

"I still don't cook," she said, then laughs.

Battle for Black Friday deals includes pepper spray, shootings (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? The holiday shopping season got off to an ugly start with shoppers pepper-spraying one another to battle for bargains and robbers shooting shoppers to steal their Black Friday purchases, police said on Friday.

In Los Angeles, authorities were reviewing Walmart security tapes to track down a Hispanic woman in her 30s who pepper-sprayed the crowd swarming Xboxes on sale 10 p.m. local time Thursday, Los Angeles police Sergeant J. Valle said.

"They were opening a package to try to get some Xboxes from a crate and this lady pepper-sprayed a whole bunch of people in order to gain an advantage over the Xboxes," Valle said.

Firefighters treated and released as many as 20 people injured in the incident at the Walmart in Northridge, California, authorities said. It was not known whether the woman actually purchased the Xboxes, Valle said.

Walmart is the U.S. discount store unit of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

In South Carolina, a Black Friday shopping spree at a Walmart in Myrtle Beach ended in gunfire when Tonia Robbins, 55, was accosted at about 1 a.m. on Friday by a robber who demanded her purse and then shot her in the foot, police said.

Robbins and her shopping companions were placing their purchases in the trunk of her car, parked across the street from the store, when the robber approached, police said.

When Robbins screamed, one of her companions reached into the car, pulled out a revolver stashed in the console and pointed it at the robber, who ran off, police said. She then fired two or three warning shots into the air.

Robbins was hospitalized and her condition was not known.
